I have been fighting off a cold for the last week and half now and honeslty just KICKING myself for getting sick in the first place. I know a lot of times we can't help when/how we get sick, but you'd be surprised at the many ways you can help to prevent a cold. I'm not just talking about washing your hands and getting ample amounts of sleep, either. I'm guessing the reason I got sick in the first place is 1. Lack of Sleep (I'm a mom -- comes with the territory, I think). 2. Too Much Junk Food (Superbowl weekend, sugary, fatty foods that my body isn't used to). 3. Lack of Exercise (enjoying a weekend off of running/weight training).
All that put together, my body just didn't fight off the "common cold" germs I came in contact with. Worst part is not only did I get sick, but my hubby decided to be oh-so-nice and clean all the bathrooms in the house for me this weekend and now he's caught the same dreaded germs.
So besides the no-brainers, here are some extra ways you can help your body fight off those germs :)
In particular, aerobic exercise (running, cardio, spinning, etc). Exercise helps activate your immune system (and the activity of white blood cells). When your white blood cells are active they are busy warding off and fighting bacteria and viruses your body comes in contact with. But I should note that I've read TOO much exercise (more than 90 minutes of exercise a day) can slow down your immune system for hours or days afterwards. So all in moderation, right? On top of that, it's regular, consistent exercise that seems to be the key here. (Basically I think it's safe to say a "Healthy" lifestyle helps!)
That's right, yogurt. I'm not saying that yogurt can completely protect you from getting a cold, but it is one of the ways to help your body fight off those germs. Probiotics help your immune system because they have the "good" kind of bacteria. (I know that the word bacteria immediately sends me into a want-to-wash-my-hands-and-everything-in-sight tizzy, but all bacteria is not bad :) ) The good, healthy bacteria is basically a little "work out" for your immune system. It strengthens your immune system so it can fight off other bad, gross bacteria. That's my personal explanation, and by no means am I a doctor!
Reduce Your Sugar
Sugar, which seems to be everywhere now days, is a sneaky little pest to our immune systems. Why? It actually depresses the immune system. Now again, I'm no doctor, so bear with me on my "common person" explanation :) Your body's white blood cells need Vitamin C to help your body get rid of bad bacteria. It also tells your body how fast to get rid of the bacteria. Sugar actually "competes" with the Vitamin C's entrance into your white blood cells. If there is more sugar, there will be less Vitamin C in your blood cells. The sugar actually slows down your immune system and doesn't allow your body to remove the bad bacteria (or grow the good bacteria for that matter). So make sure your body is getting enough Vitamin C, but don't ruin it by ingesting lots of sugar, either.
Those are just a few easy ways....there are so many more ways to keep yourself healthy that I didn't delve into :) There are lots of essential oils that can help prevent a cold. As for treating symptoms once you have that annoying virus, I recommend the tea pictured above. I love it. I know they sell it at Target up here, but you can also find it online too :)
Here's to staying healthy the rest of the year!!
