It's happened to probably every mom; we rush around all day and get to the store only to realize we are two nano-seconds away from a full on hangry meltdown along with our toddlers. Please tell me I'm not alone! And choosing the right snack at the grocery store when there are endless possibilities of snacks and treats can be a bit of a daunting challenge. So below are some of our go-to snacks that will keep you satisfied but won't wreck your healthy eating habits:
If you are in the produce section, don't forget to check out the section of 100% juices and smoothies that are available. My favorite brands are Naked and Bolthouse. They offer fresh fruit ingredients without adding sugar or other fillers. They taste great and are definitely a top pick for those summer months when the weather is scorching.
Did you know they sold pre-packaged hard boiled eggs at the store? They do! Usually you can find them in the deli department. But I've also seen them sneak into the produce and/or dairy. They are great for a snack that really keeps you full for the long haul. Eggs are a great re-fueling food for after workouts or for a snack in between meals on busy days.
There are so many ways you can enjoy peanut butter. If you are in a serious time crunch, plain peanut butter will certainly do the trick. But if you have a minute and you can swing it, grab something to dip into your PB. Top picks are pre-packaged apple slices, carrots or celery. You could also grab some pretzels or cracker to use as well. Look for the individual cups of peanut butter to keep it simple.
We love these for the protein and it's a great way to get those omega 3's. The packages they make now are perfect to grab and go. You can mix a package or light mayo in if you want or just grab a fork and go to town. We love these if you are looking for lunch while you are on the go. You can add some carrots and a fruit smoothie and be set for lunchtime when you're running around town.
And while we are talking about items in produce, you can also try some of the great pre-packaged produce they have available. If you have a fork go for some precut melon or pineapple. Another fantastic option is baby carrots. Although they can be more expensive than getting it fresh, when you are needing a snack and you're on the go, these fresh fruit containers are a real life-saver.
Grab a spoon and a yogurt and you'll stop your hunger in it's tracks. Check the labels for sugar though, yogurt, especially Greek yogurt can be a bit sneaky with additives. But once you find a low sugar, high protein Greek yogurt you like, you know you've always got a snack to grab when you're at the store or in a hurry.
Just like yogurt, cottage cheese now comes in easy, handy little individual servings. You can buy a little cup (some brands also have fruit-mix-ins) and grab a spoon and go. Cottage cheese is one of those snacks that leaves you full when you know you won't have a meal for a while. It also keeps your blood sugar a bit more stable so you aren't going to crash in the middle of your busy day.
Nuts, raisins, granola. Who doesn't love it? It's another great option for an on the go snack when you're running around all day. But be careful to check the labels on these. Some trail mixes are known for being high in carbs and sugar, which will leave you feeling sluggish after your blood sugar plummets. You're going to want to look for a high protein mix that has as little sugar as possible. And because it contains delicious nuts you're also benefiting from those good fats.
These aren't you're only choices for a healthy snack at the store, but they are a great way to get you started in the right direction when you're on the go and need an energy boost. The best thing you can do is either purchase something that doesn't have a label (fresh produce) or check the labels for sugar content. A snack that is high in protein and fiber will keep you full longer and won't wreck your healthy eating habits.
